Early Settlers on the Upper Elwha Alice Bretches Alexander
Local author and historian Alice Alexander will present material and photos from her book "Early Settlers on the Upper Elwha". She will briefly cover a few early settlers, beginning up the East side of the river from the park boundary and then down the West side. She will share photos from her book, and a few additional ones that are not in her book. There will be a section on the building of both the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams, and also a section on the old Olympic Hot Springs Resort from its birth to its demise.
Alice is a descendant of a pioneer family that homesteaded in the Upper Elwha in 1893, and is author of "A Pioneer Family - Homesteading the Upper Elwha River Valley". You may have enjoyed her history column in the PDN. Alice is a member of the Clallam County Heritage Board and a volunteer at the Clallam County Historical Society. She is working on a fourth book "Disappearing Resorts of Lake Crescent and Lake Sutherland" planned to come out in the summer of 2012.
