It's all about wilderness preservation … told in the inspiring words of Harvey Manning – the irate birdwatcher. Follow the legendary Northwest writer and conservationist as he discovers the beauty of Washington’s wildest places, and the need to stand up and fight for their very survival. This is Harvey’s story about this state’s unique wilderness … his deep passion for it, his years of ramblings as an avid backpacker and climber, and his own personal crusade to preserve and protect it for future generations … with a wee bit of preaching thrown in to boot.
Filmakers Robert and Kathy Crestensen share their film The Irate Birdwatcher on Friday, December 9, 2011, 7 pm, at the Senior Center in Port Angeles, 328 East 7th St. This is a benefit for the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club.
The film features the insightful and often poetic words of Harvey Manning – the legendary Northwest writer (famous for the 100 Hikes series and Mountaineering : Freedom of the Hills) and staunch conservationist. In the early ‘60s Manning (using the pen name "Irate Birdwatcher") became the voice of a dedicated band of hikers and climbers, turned conservationists, who spearheaded the grassroots movement that brought us the North Cascades National Park, as well as other designated wilderness areas, including the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. His writing was also instrumental in passing the Washington Wilderness Act of 1984. The movie follows Harvey through decades as he unveils the beauty of Washington’s wildest places and discovers the need to stand up and fight for their very survival.
Robert Chrestensen continues to capture the heart and imagination of audiences with his a "walk in my footsteps" perspective and creative approach to filmmaking. His work brings the natural world to us in an up-close and personal way. His stunning video, filmed while climbing and backpacking throughout the rugged Cascades and Olympics, supports The Irate Birdwatcher story seamlessly.
