Friends has joined the Washington Clean Coast Alliance, which sponsors the annual Coast Cleanup on Earth Day, the Saturday nearest April 22 each year.
Duk Point Beaches
Duk Point lies in the heart of Olympic NP's northern wilderness beaches. Duk Point beaches run 2 miles north to Point of the Arches, at the south end of Shi Shi Beach, and 2 miles south to the Ozette River, just north of Cape Alava. Friends are the only group with direct vehicle access to this central, otherwise inaccessible, stretch of wilderness beach. In 2011, we filled 140 trash bags, collected dozens of floats with hundreds of feet of line, and other flotsam, filling 4 pickup trucks with over 1400 pounds of trash.
Friends volunteers meet at Ozette Campground at 8:30 am Saturday morning; many camp out at Ozette on Friday night.
Friends are guests of Duk Point inholders during the cleanup. They meet us at 9 am at the Green Crow gate on Mainline Road, 1 mile north of Ozette Ranger Station, and escort our vehicles 4 miles up Mainline Road and 2 miles out Seafield Road and through the Park gate to Duk Point. These are one lane gravel roads, suitable for pickups and 4WD cars.
Duk Point is the only point on the Park's Northern Coastal wilderness between Rialto Beach and Sooes Beach with direct access to the beach. We expect this to be an ongoing annual activity for years to come.
Please plan to join us in this unique opportunity to make a big contribution to the success of the coast cleanup! If you can join us at Duk Point, please RSVP by e-mail to Rod Farlee.
Shi-Shi Beach
More ambitious hikers are invited to join our cleanup effort at Shi-Shi Beach. It involves a 2 mile hike from the trailhead, and up to 2 miles along the beach to Point of the Arches. Trash must be packed out to the trailhead. Register at the Makah Tribal Center for a free overnight parking permit, before proceeding to the trailhead. To join, e-mail Brian Berggren.
In 2011, 4 volunteers packed 21 filled trash bags out from Shi-Shi, and we hope to increase this effort in 2012.
