On this day Feb. 9th Dallas and I hiked the north side of Lake Crescent as we have done in the past. We never tire of this place. A place of magnificent grandeur, mystique and spirit. We used the stretch limo getting off at East Beach Road. We had 5-1/2 hours to complete the journey (13 miles) utilizing East Beach Rd., passing by Log Cabin Resort, crossing the Lyre River at Piedmont, trekking the Spruce Railroad Trail and finally walking the Camp David Jr.Rd. from Camp David to Fairholme. Our calculations were right on. We even had 20 minutes to spare before our pick-up time.
Trail update: The Spruce Railroad Trail is now blacktopped and completed from the top of Fairholme Hill to the terminus of Camp David Jr. Rd. Note my photo titled "Gee." This sign is located directly over the now gone outhouse which was located at the end of the old 4 mile mark hiking from Piedmont. We did not heed the sign and continued on the new stretch of trail and wondered why the closing need to be posted. This time of year they are not working on the trail although a washout still exists taking half of the blacktop with it. It is well marked and I don't see the danger. Liability is the probable answer.
As I said, I never tire of this place. Every time I visit, the Lake offers something different. The seasons offer a diverse change in the mountains, clouds, wind, birds and foliage. The lake itself holds so many mysteries of folks now gone that loved this place as I do; making me wonder what stories the lake knows that will never be told.
